Why do we deadlift an Olympic bar from 225mm above the ground?

December 8, 2016

Why do we deadlift an Olympic bar from 225mm above the ground? Because the weight plates raise the bar off the ground to that height. It’s a completely arbitrary distance which results in only training the hamstrings/posterior chain/neurology to lift weights from this height. Cross over to the real world and we suddenly have to pick up things on the ground…not 225mm above it. Our bodies aren’t ready for this movement and we get injured. Train for the real world with some elevated stiff leg deadlifts. You aren’t going to lift anywhere near what you can in an Olympic lift but you can prehabilitate your body against injury in the real world. Start off with a really light weight. Stand on a box and fold into a stiff leg deadlift. The weight is there to assist you into a deeper position. At your lowest point try and push the weight even deeper by contracting your core and quads. The whole movement should be smooth and controlled.
