When in Rome….’ I’m normally gluten free
When in Rome….’ I’m normally gluten free but you can’t go to Italy and not eat all the amazing food there is on offer. It’s also an interesting experiment on how it makes me feel having been gluten free for about 6 years. Until 9500 years ago there was no wheat gluten in our diet. In fact wheat, until this time was only found in a small range of mountains in the Middle East. Our ancestors found wheat here and spread it very rapidly around the world…not because it was healthy for us, but because it’s so easy to cultivate…indeed, grains enabled us to spread across the globe as it’s easily grown in a variety of climates, and easily stored allowing for humans to populate more seasonal climates. The benefits of grain consumption comes with a down side though. The proteins in wheat in some people cause major problems – coeliac is at one end of a scale of reactions that our body’s can have to the consumption of grains but this is not the only problem.
Modern medicine is now investigating links with a whole host of other problems caused by grains…links to other conditions, not just problems with the gut but problems throughout the whole body are being discovered. For example, neurological conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s may also arise as a result of gluten consumption. For more info on this you can check out ‘Grain Brain’ by Dr Perlmutter. These modern day diseases are probably escalating due to the highly refined and genetically modified grains we are eating these days not to mention the extra chemicals being added to our grain products…if you are old enough (I am) you’ll remember when a loaf of bread lasted a couple of days..now it lasts a couple of weeks… added extras stop your bread from going off..good for you? Probably not. My diet is not just about being fat or not..it’s about ensuring I stay healthy…any diet will work if you stick to it but it doesn’t mean it’s HEALTHY for you. So I want to tell you how grains have made me feel…mouth ulcers, bloating, flatulence, bowel changes, and mental fog. I’m not a nice person to be around at the moment!
