When did the pull up bar become the pull up bar?

When did the pull up bar become the pull up bar? When we lost sight of other possibilities!
Don’t get me wrong, pull ups are important, but if you learn to explore equipment in the gym you’ll become a much more rounded human being…not just muscles, but able to move too. Most of the training I do is not isolated…it’s exploratory…I go to the gym with a concept in mind e.g. how many ways can I get above the ‘pull up’ bar? Not, how can I make this or that muscle bigger.
Whilst training I look for restrictions or weaknesses in my body that stop me completing a certain task and work on those. These tasks may not always be functional…they may be playful, or focus on a particular movement principle (such as timing, coordination, balance etc). .
