I’m currently doing some research into teaching movement to aged clients

Movement coaching really is for everyone. I’m currently doing some research into teaching movement to aged clients with neurological impairments such as strokes and Parkinson’s disease. The goal is to keep people independent and out of nursing homes for as long as possible. Falls at home are really common and as a Paramedic in London I spent much of my time picking old people up off the floor. This is a massive problem for the emergency services…but also for YOU!

We are all getting older, and it’s far too easy to fall into this trap. You may be able to get yourself up off the floor now but in how many different ways? What happens if you injure a limb or a muscle in the fall, can you still get up? How fragile is your independence? Most people only use one or two methods to get up from the floor. It’s easy to lose this capacity as you age. In fact, studies show that if you are unable to get up off the floor unassisted, you are 6 times more likely to die from any illness than someone who is able to.

The research we are undertaking also goes deeper than just being able to get up off the floor. We evolved a brain for one purpose alone. Movement. All the other functions of your brain are secondary. We are exploring the concept of using movement to heal the brain by teaching the neurologically impaired to move again. By learning to move in new ways throughout our lives we can keep our brains healthy and avoid age related neurological degeneration. ——————————————————-
I train my clients using over 30 different methods to get up from the floor, whatever their age. How are you preparing for your future?
