Flexibility vs Mobility
These words are often used synonymously but they actually mean very different things. The picture on the left demonstrates flexibility. Flexibility is passive…the ability to be stretched into a position without contraction of muscles. The picture on the right demonstrates mobility, as I’m having to contract muscles in order to hold my leg out. It requires not only flexibility in my hamstring but also strength in my quad, abs, hip flexors etc… Stretching for flexibility has very little carry over into our day to day life however mobility training and the development of strength throughout the full range of motion of a joint is very useful for everyday life, prehabilitation against injury and strength training.
