The heavier the weight the better, stronger, fitter, etc… you are right? Not always. Sometimes weights should be used to help rather than hinder our movements. This exercise is a great way to open up the hips. Poor range of movement in the ankle, hip and hamstring will make this movement impossible without weight to counterbalance your restricted movement. The more advanced variation is to use a lighter weight or no weight at all.
